interviewer: Of all the bands that you have toured with throughout your career, who were you most delighted to share the stage with?
h: We shared a stage with PORCUPINE TREE who are good friends and also a very good band. And DREAM THEATER. In 1994, we played a gig in Munich called Terminal Eins. The last band to have performed there before us was NIRVANA. It had been their last show before (Kurt) Cobain's suicide. That was an honor, although somewhat spooky.
____
Steve Hogarth: "But I think this song is mostly inspired by Kurt Cobain's suicide notes. I have never met him, but I felt very close to him in some ways. The last ever Nirvana gig was at Munich's Terminal 1. From there the band traveled to Rome and stayed at the Cavalieri Hilton, one of my favourite hotels. Cobain took an overdose in his hotel room and I could just about imagine him there, I could see the hotel room, the bathroom, the furniture...
They then flew Cobain back to America, where as you all know he shot himself. Marillion was the first ever band to go on stage at Terminal 1 after Nirvana. I was the first to take centre stage and it was a very weird sensation. There I was, dressed as a bloody priest walking up to the centre of the stage and it was as if I was following a ghost...A most peculiar situation!"
насчет "there I was, dressed as a bloody priest..." - мариллион откатывали тур в поддержку brave, который был выпущен в 94ом и h выходил на сцену в черной рясе и с крестом. с 2002 тоже есть видео, ряса, цветы и лицо в помаде.
а что касается "I felt very close to him in some ways...", то тут очевидно речь о публичности, о том, как быть лицом группы, о том, как вдруг свалилась слава и с ней ответственность. на h это все именно что упало, так что разумеется в 90е на него давление было со всех сторон.
